You can have a second player help you in your career mode by destroying the competition. First, go to the Fast Action section on the top and set up a race for whatever type of car series you are in on career mode.

To do that, go to the activation screen and slide the controllers over. When you get to the driver-select screen, keep going back with TRIANGLE until you get back to the main menu.

Now resume your career mode and start a race. The purpose for this is because you can have a friend drive in the second car that is a random car from the competition. He can now drive that car backwards and smash the other cars or knock out your closest rival.
